Comparing First-Fit and Next-Fit for Online Edge Coloring
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study the performance of the algorithms First-Fit and Next-Fit for two online edge coloring problems. In the min-coloring problem, all edges must be colored using as few colors as possible. In the max-coloring problem, a fixed number of colors is given, and as many edges as possible should be colored. Previous analysis using the competitive ratio has not separated the performance of First-Fit and Next-Fit, but intuition suggests that First-Fit should be better than Next-Fit. We compare First-Fit and Next-Fit using the relative worstorder ratio, and show that First-Fit is better than Next-Fit for themin-coloring problem. For the max-coloring problem, we show that First-Fit and Next-Fit are not strictly comparable, i.e., there are graphs for which First-Fit is significantly better than Next-Fit and graphs where Next-Fit is slightly better than First-Fit. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. On-Line Edge-Coloring with a Fixed Number of Colors1
We investigate a variant of on-line edge-coloring in which there is a fixed number of colors available and the aim is to color as many edges as possible. We prove upper and lower bounds on the performance of different classes of algorithms for the problem. Moreover, we determine the performance of two specific algorithms, First-Fit and Next-Fit. Specifically, algorithms that never reject edges ...
متن کاملA Note on Circular Arc Online Coloring using First Fit
In [1] using a column construction technique it is proved that every interval graph can be colored online with First Fit with at most 8w(G) colors, where w(G) is the size of the maximum clique of G. Since the column construction can not be adapted to circular arc graphs we give a different proof to establish an upper bound of 9w(G) for online coloring a circular arc graph G with the First Fit a...
متن کاملOn-Line Coloring of Oriented Graphs
A graph coloring algorithm that immediatly colors the vertices taken from a list without looking ahead or changing colors already assigned is called an one-line coloring algorithmm. We study in this paper on-line oriented coloring algorithms. Firstly, we investigate the First-Fit algorithm and we try to characterize the F F-optimall graphs that is the graphs for which there exists a linear orde...
متن کاملFirst-fit coloring on interval graphs has performance ratio at least 5
First-fit is the online graph coloring algorithm that considers vertices one at a time in some order and assigns each vertex the least positive integer not used already on a neighbor. The maximum number of colors used by first-fit on graph G over all vertex orders is denoted χFF (G). The exact value of R := supG χFF (G) ω(G) over interval graphs G is unknown. متن کاملA lower bound for approximating the grundy number
In first-fit coloring, we color the vertices with positive integers. The vertices arrive on-line, and we color the next vertex v by the minimum number not appearing in its neighborhood. The grundy number of a graph is the maximum possible number of colors used by on-line first-fit coloring, under the worst order of arrival of vertices. The grundy number problem is to find this worst ordering. T...
